Robert D. Maxwell

Recipient of THE MEDAL OF HONOR 

Robert “Bob” Maxwell participated in invasions of Sicily, Italy, and France. He received two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts, and a Bronze Star. Bob Joined the Navy for a “cruise” from Naples to southern France in “Operation Dragoon.” He was severely wounded in Besancon, France on 7 September 1944 when he threw himself on a German hand grenade, saving the lives of three members of his unit. Bob was awarded the Medal of Honor by General C.W. Danielson with citation signed by President Roosevelt. Bob is the only living Congressional Medal of Honor recipient in Oregon state.
